Multiply Polynomial with Mononomial

Algebra Help: Section 2.14

Use algebra to multiply a polynomial with a mononomial.

1. Multiply 4b + 5a2 - bc by 3a.

OPERATION:

4b + 5a2 - bc
3a
_____________________________
12ab + 15a3 - 3abc

ANALYSIS - Multiply the entire multiplicand by 3a, one term at a time. Multiply each term of the multiplicand by 3a separately. Place each term in the appropriate column.

3a times 4b equals 12ab. 3a times 5a2 equals 15a3. 3a times bc equals 3abc.

Note 3a implies an exponent of one. Therefore 3a times 5a2 is the same as 15a*a*a, and a*a*a equals a3

RULE - Multiply each term of the polynomial by the multiplier (mononomial), and write the products connected by their proper signs.
