You may often conveniently express the difference between two dissimilar quantities in a single term. Make some common letter or letters the unit of subtraction.
2. From ax subtract bx.
OPERATION
Minuend ax
Subtrahend bx
________
Remainder (a - b)x
ANALYSIS - The common letter is x. You may separate x
from the expression. Then use parenthesis to indicate multiplying both a and b by x.
a times x equals
(a - b)x
