Square a Binomial
Algebra Help: Section 2.16
If you multiply a polynomial by itself, the product equals the square of the polynomial. You can square a binomial quantity without the formal multiplication process.
1. What is the square of a + b?
OPERATION:
a + b
a + b

a2 + ab
ab + b2
_____________
a2 + 2ab + b2
ANALYSIS -
Multiplying a + b by a + b
with the common method, obtains three results:
- The square of
a;a2. - Twice the product of
aandb;2ab. - The square of
b;b2.

ANALYSIS -
Multiplying a - b by a - b
with the common method, obtains three results:
- The square of

Twice the product of +
aand -b; -2ab. Notice -abplus -abequals -2ab. - The square of
b;b2.
RULE - Wrtie the square of the first term, twice the product of the two terms, and the square of the second term.
NOTE - The product of the two terms will be negative, when one of the terms subtracts.
