Resolve a Trinomial
Algebra Help: Section 2.27
Learn to resolve a trinomial into two equal binomial factors.
A trinomial may be resolved into two binomial factors when two of its terms are perfect squares and positive, and the other term is twice the product of their square roots, and either positive or negative.
1. Factor a2 + 2ac + c2
ANALYSIS -
a2
is the square of a
.
Also c2
is the square of c
.
Also 2ac
equals twice the product of a
and c
.
Since a2 + 2ac + c2
is
the sum of the squares of a
and c
plus twice their product, it must be the
square of (a + c)
or (a + c)(a + c)
.
Rule
RULE - Connect the square roots of the two squares by the sign of the other term, and write the result twice as a factor.
