Find the difference between polynomials. From a subtract b - c.
5. OPERATION

ANALYSIS- We first subtract b, and the result obtained is b - a.
But our true subtrahend is not b. Our true subtrahend, the amount we're subtracting is, b - c.
We have subtracted a quantity which is too great. The quantity is too great by the value c represents.
Our remainder is too small, by the value of c. Therefore we add c to the
first result. Then we obtain the true remainder, which is,
a - b + c.
By this example, we have in a more general manner established the principle, that the sign of a term to be sutbracted must be changed. Hence the following.
RULES -
- Write the subtrahend underneath the minuend, placing similar terms in the same columns.
- Change the signs of the terms of the subtrahend, or conceive them to be changed.
- Unite similar terms as in addition, and bring down all the remaining terms with their proper signs.
